Beethoven composed four overtures for his only opera, Fidelio. The first three evolved into expansive symphonic movements during the creation process. It wasn't until the premiere of the third version of the opera in 1814 that Beethoven succeeded in creating an overture he deemed sufficiently effective and appropriately concise.
