Stalin vs. Shostakovich
Concert and theatre performance. Suggestive theatrical performance The Noise of Time at the Prague MeetFactory. An original adaptation of the fictional biography of Dmitri Shostakovich. "What options does a man, convinced of his talent, facing the inhuman and morally distorted circumstances of his time, have if he wants to survive, create and at the same time save his face - at least in front of himself?" That this is an intimate and very personal work is expressed by Shostakovich in the opening bars of String Quartet No. 8. He introduces his "signature note" D-eS-C-H, which forms a very supporting musical theme, at the beginning of the first movement and works with it throughout.

ABOUT
Julian Barnes: The Noise of Time
Literary adaptation of a fictitious biography of Dmitri Shostakovich who spent almost all his life in Soviet Russia. He was persecuted during the Stalinist era because his formalist music did not meet the state propaganda requirements. Exposed to extreme political pressures which he was brought on to bear in the prevailing atmosphere of the cult of Stalin’s personality, he was eventually coerced into adjusting his work to the regime´s doctrine.
