ABOUT THE OPERA

There is perhaps no other character that has been given as many different treatments as Faust. Only don Juan or don Giovanni can stand the comparison. The historical scholar Faust is said to have lived in the years 1480-1540. According to a legend that arose shortly after, this physician-alchemist consorted with the devil in order to restore his youth. The story has been an appealing substance interpreted from many different angles and ways by many artists.

Probably the most important and best-known is the classic drama by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who wrote part of it on Czech territory while staying in Karlovy Vary. Faust, a lyrical opera in five acts by the French composer Charles Gounod from 1859, is probably the most famous musical-dramatic treatment of the material.
