Jakub Smolík
Jakub Smolík is a Czech composer and singer. He was born in Domažlice and grew up in Hradové Střimelice near Prague. He graduated from the Mechanical Engineering School in Kolín and founded a band called Travelers (1975) with his classmate Luboš Trnká. From 1978-80, he completed compulsory military service (in České Budějovice), where he founded the Horizont wind and dance orchestra, which won several awards.
After returning from the war, he studied at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory in Prague (1982-85). As a student, he joined the rock groups Rockyt and Kroket. A year after studying at the conservatory, he started working with the singer Lucía Bíla and the band Maximum (1986). Smolík's talent was seen by producer Petr Hannig, who forced Smolík to change his name from Jaroslav to Jakub. At that time, he produced his hit Až te pode pode pode pode. The song first appeared on the TV show Pozor, pozniwem. In 1987, Smolík won the Duhová deska award for the song of the year. This was followed by a tour of the Soviet Union, where he played a total of sixty concerts (1988-89).
The debut album Až se ti jednou bude zdát was released in 1992. In the same year, the album The greatest country hits sung by Jakub Smolík was released in the Carmen company. Smolík has released a total of 27 albums so far. The last album Happy and Merry Christmas was released in 2016. In the Český slavík 2003 poll, it won the prize in the Jumper of the Year category.
