Illuminations and the Creation of Copies

ABOUT THE EVENT

A closer look at medieval illuminations—or how copies are made. Illuminations are small pictures in handwritten books, illuminated with gold and painted using a colourful palette of pigments made from semi-precious stones and plants. How can we examine the individual layers of colour today and discover how the artist worked? I will present the collaboration between historical methods and chemical analyses that makes it possible to create a copy of a rare illumination with the perfection of the medieval masters.
