Jane and Mike are two unlucky people who have been left “on the shelf”. Mike is a divorced travelling salesman and father of a twelve-year-old son; Jane is the single mother of two-and-a-half-year-old Lucy. One morning they meet in Mike's flat, where Jane has arrived as a casual acquaintance of Mike's flatmate Ted. Mike unexpectedly returns from a business trip. Both have made similar mistakes with unfortunate consequences. The mutual sympathy and empathy between these two unlucky souls grows by the minute. The resolution is surprising and unexpected.
