With her mother’s diary in hand, eighteen-year-old Marina sets off for the west coast of Spain to the places where her parents, whom she never knew, once fell in love. Before she can find her bearings in a sea of unknown relatives, secrets begin to emerge that, even years later, sting more than the summer sun and salty sea spray. From fragmentary and often contradictory memories, Marina pieces together an unexpected picture of her parents’ fateful, destructive love. Director Carla Simón returns to her adolescence at the turn of the millennium with bittersweet tenderness and nostalgia. This partially autobiographical story about the search for one’s roots received enthusiastic reviews in the Main Competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
