The end of 2024 brings us and the entire art world a poignant commemoration; November 29th marks 100 years since the passing of one of the most famous opera greats, Giacomo Puccini. This anniversary also signifies 100 years since the creation of his masterpiece opera, Turandot, which remained unfinished at the time of his death. Following Puccini's note, the work was subsequently completed by his student Franco Alfano, and it is this well-known version that we present.
Even though Turandot was written during the early 20th century, it presents the pinnacle of majestic 19th-century Italian opera tradition. It features rich instrumentation, brilliant vocal melodies and European curiosity of that time about eastern cultures. Set in the imperial city of Beijing, the opera tells the story of the mysterious princess Turandot, who challenges her suitors with three riddles, with death as the penalty for failure. The arrival of the unknown and fearless prince Calaf ignites a tale of love, sacrifice, and redemption. The work presents themes of power, desire, and the transformative nature of love.
Even in his last opera, Puccini undeniably affirmed his unique talent for creating melodies that deeply resonate with audiences. One proof speaks for all: one of the most well-known arias of the opera: “Nessun dorma…”
Today, Turandot is a significant and beloved part of the opera world, enchanting both experienced opera goers and newcomers with its majestic music, brilliant melodies, dramatic intensity, and timeless love story of love triumphing above all.
