Icharev, a successful cardsharp, arrives at a hotel in an unnamed town to play and turn a handsome profit. He has been looking for his next victim for almost a month. He can therefore barely contain himself when he discovers that a group of three other gamblers is operating at the hotel. But they may be much better players than they first appear...

What is a person willing to stake and do in order to win? What can they count on? Whom can they trust? How much can they rely on their abilities? What role does chance play? And—what game is actually being played?
