Description

ABOUT

Classical ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky performed by students and graduates of the Prague Dance Conservatory.

With the first notes of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s music, the stage comes to life and turns into a fairy-tale kingdom. Get ready for a nighttime adventure where dreams come true. Little Clara receives an extraordinary figurine for Christmas – the Nutcracker. Little does she know that at the stroke of midnight her toy will wake up and take her on an extraordinary and long journey. Together they embark on an expedition to a magical world, where the Nutcracker fights as a brave prince against the evil Mouse King. Their journey takes them to the Kingdom of Snowflakes, where dance creates a fragile and sparkling landscape, they travel through exotic landscapes full of butterflies and birds and finally to the Kingdom of the Christmas Fairy. There, a rich palette of colors, music and dances awaits Clara.

The Nutcracker ballet is full of pure joy, love and the magic of Christmas. Immerse yourself with us in a world where imagination knows no bounds and where even the most ordinary toy can become a hero.

The Nutcracker ballet was created at the end of the 19th century and is one of the most famous and most performed ballets in the world. It premiered on December 18, 1892, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. The music was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and the libretto is based on an adaptation of E. T. A. Hoffmann’s story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” which was adapted by Alexandre Dumas. The choreography for the original version was created by Lev Ivanov, a collaborator of the famous Marius Petipa. Initially, The Nutcracker was not as successful as Tchaikovsky’s previous ballets (Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty), but during the 20th century it gained enormous popularity, mainly thanks to American and European companies that began to perform it around Christmas.

Today, The Nutcracker is considered a symbol of the Christmas season and is a classic repertoire title at all major ballet theaters. Its enchanting story about the girl Clara, the magical Nutcracker, and a dream world full of dance and fantasy embodies the ideal of childhood dreams, joy, and the beauty of music and movement. It is an example of the perfect combination of dance, music, and theatrical magic—and to this day inspires countless new productions around the world.

Interestingly, The Nutcracker received a rather lukewarm reception at its premiere—critics at the time considered the plot too childish and not ballet-like enough. Tchaikovsky himself was not very enthusiastic about the theme at first, but as we now know, his music became legendary. At the time, he wanted to use a new musical instrument, the celesta, which sounds like magical bells. Because of its enchanting sound, he used it for the Sugar Plum Fairy’s dance, which ultimately became one of the most famous moments in the entire ballet.
