ABOUT THE PLAY

Do you think an inheritance always means a win? Sometimes it can bring quite a surprise and suddenly turn your life into… a cabaret!

This new comedy from Divadlo Kalich has several strengths. It unfolds in the attractive world behind the theatre curtain, is filled with unforgettable lines and comic situations arising from the rivalry of five very different characters, and offers five substantial acting roles. Its author is a master of comedy popular on Czech stages, while the director is one of today’s most respected theatre-makers.

Curtain Up is an excellently written comedy and a great celebration of tolerance, forgiveness, mutual understanding and the willingness of different generations to listen to one another.

The story takes the audience to a bankrupt theatre whose owner has left it in his will to the five most important women in his life—on condition that they restore it together. The task is all the harder because every heiress is completely different and they seem unable to agree on absolutely anything.
