“A colossal edifice, constructed in a thoroughly thematic style and at the same time with a rigorous unity of feeling. The new symphony surpasses its predecessors in structural solidity, but also in its realism and nerve-racking intensity. It sounds like an alarm call. Friend and foe alike rush to arms.” This was how one critic described Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 following its premiere in 1906. The Czech Philharmonic, which recently recorded the work, has invited its colleagues from Rome to show us what Mahler sounds like in Italian hands.
