ABOUT THE PLAY
The world made a whore of me, and now I will make a brothel of the world.
Friedrich Dürrenmatt's internationally acclaimed play The Visit uses humour and irony to examine the corruptibility of the modern world. Billionaire Claire Zachanassian, the “richest woman in the world”, returns to Güllen, the now impoverished town where she was born.
As a young woman, she became pregnant by Alfred Ill, who denied paternity in court with the help of a bribed witness. Claire now makes the destitute townspeople an extraordinarily generous offer: she will give them a billion if one of them kills her former lover and justice is finally done.
At first, the people of Güllen insist they are too civilised to accept. Gradually, however, they begin to wonder whether their decaying town should not be civilised first. Zachanassian knows her truth and waits. Directed by Adam Steinbauer, this brilliantly written comedy—or rather grotesque tragicomedy—ultimately sends a chill down the spine.
