ABOUT THE CONCERT
Love has many forms, and French music can portray them with extraordinary intensity. The first half belongs to melancholy and memory: in Chausson’s Poème de l’amour et de la mer, the scent of lilac mingles with salty sea air, while the soprano sketches images of fading flowers and vanishing love.
Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique offers a powerful contrast. Its story began in 1827 at Paris’s Odéon Theatre, where the young composer first saw actress Harriet Smithson as Ophelia. Love at first sight became an obsession, and Berlioz poured all its turbulent emotions into his symphony. Through the music, we too can experience this extraordinary story.
