The English composer Edward Elgar reached the height of his fame during the first decades of the twentieth century. When he composed his Cello Concerto in 1918–19, he was burdened by fears of a creative crisis, despair over the devastation of war, and concerns about his declining health. Although the concerto is imbued with profound melancholy and personal nostalgia, Elgar succeeded in creating one of the greatest masterpieces of the cello repertoire—a work that continues to captivate audiences around the world to this day.
