ABOUT
This second symphonic evening under the baton of Petr Popelka, chief conductor of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, will present the third and fourth symphonies by Johannes Brahms. They will take you to a world of beauty, melancholy and introspection.
The programme will open with Symphony No.3 in F Major, a lyrical piece with a very clear musical structure. Brahms' masterly balance between calm and inner tension is evident in it. The opening notes of the symphony F-Ab-F can be understood as Brahms' motto: "Frei, aber froh" - Free but happy.
Symphony No. 4 in E Minor will conclude Popelka's project of performing all four Brahms symphonies in two consecutive evenings. This symphony is one of the high points of Brahms' oeuvre. The composer uses musical contrasts to capture the depth of the human soul. The final fourth movement is written in the form of a passacaglia, originally a baroque dance form from the 16th century. This movement brings a majestic conclusion to a work that is an intimate experience.
The concert will be broadcast live on Czech Radio Vltava.
