A sweeping romantic story based on the famous Oscar-winning film about forbidden love in the world of Elizabethan theatre, when only men were permitted to appear on stage.

Young playwright William Shakespeare is struggling with his latest play. He is getting nowhere, lacking both strength and inspiration—until he falls in love. Headlong and passionately. Unfortunately, the object of his affection is the noblewoman Viola de Lesseps, who is soon to be married. Yet Viola loves the theatre so deeply that, disguised as a man, she attempts to join Shakespeare's acting company. Along with her, we too enter the extraordinary backstage world of the theatre. Amid mistaken identities, great love, errors and misunderstandings, intrigue, business manoeuvring and the wonderfully entertaining and perceptive bustle of theatrical life unfolds an enchanting fictional tale of how the most famous play of all time, Romeo and Juliet, might have come into being. Thrilling, dramatic and witty, the story is complemented by clever references to Shakespeare's other plays and to real historical figures. Queen Elizabeth II, who secretly attends the theatre and is a devoted admirer of Shakespeare, also makes an appearance.
