ABOUT THE SUBSCRIPTION

A Dvořák programme and symphonies by Beethoven and Brahms is how we might briefly introduce the three concerts led by chief conductor Semyon Bychkov in Subscription Series B. Besides his premiere with the Czech Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor Jakub Hrůša will prepare another major work by Josef Suk – the symphonic poem Ripening for large orchestra and women’s choir. Giovanni Antonini will lead a varied programme of works by Mozart, Haydn, Rossini, and Schubert featuring the stellar Egyptian soprano Fatma Said. Making his debut with the Czech Philharmonic is the Ossetian native Tugan Sokhiev, a star conductor of worldwide fame who resigned from his post as music director of Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in March 2022 in protest against the war in the Ukraine. Sokhiev will conduct Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, which is associated with the French repertoire because of its orchestration by Maurice Ravel.

It would be only a slight exaggeration to call Subscription Series B a Czech-Austrian Series with one sidestep to Russia and France. Semyon Bychkov will conduct works by Dvořák, Beethoven, and Brahms, and Jakub Hrůša will lead Suk’s Ripening. Giovanni Antonini will offer a Mozart opera gala, and Tugan Sokhiev will debut with an excursion to Mussorg
