KREISLERIANA
The German Romantic composer Robert Schumann (1810-1856) entered music with the intention of becoming a piano virtuoso. His piano scores differ from the mass production of virtuoso pieces of the time. Rather than being of first-rate effect, they are intrinsically complex, have unusual rhythms and notation, often have extra-musical themes and inspirations, and often have an enigmatic feel. Sergei Rachmaninoff, one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, contributed several opuses to the genre of the piano prelude. Together with the famous Prelude in C sharp minor and the thirteen pieces from Op. 13, they form a complete set of 24 preludes in all keys (see the following concert).
